Yards Tap Handle Roundup

Back in the heat of summer, when the city breathed a collective sigh of relief if the mercury dropped down to 90, NextFab was already planning its October schedule. We were thinking beer. We’ve been happy to be a part of DesignPhiladelphia since we first opened in 2010 and we’re more thrilled than ever at our contribution this year: the Yards Tap Handle Throwdown.

We opened up our call for entries in June, inviting makers, beer drinkers, and the intersection of the two to contribute their design for a new Yards tap handle. Short and stout? Delicate and sophisticated?  Full-bodied and flamboyant? We encouraged participants to dream up their ideal tap handle, fabricate it, and submit it for judging. And with the impending arrival of DesignPhiladelphia, the time for judging is nigh.

It’s been a blast so far – with nearly 20 entries and a slew of public events over the past few months, our belief in the city as not only a beer-drinkers’ haven but a place for innovation and collaboration has been reinforced. In July, we coupled our monthly NextFabulous Social with a Yards’ Brewery tour and tasting room visit. In August we hosted a one-day handmade tap-handle prototyping workshop. If there was ever a Pieta in tap-handle form, we saw it that day. Now that it's September, we're rallying the crowds: a preview at Kraftwork Bar was a lot of fun. Further events at City Tap House and other local bars are in the works.

The final unveiling of the entrants’ tap handles commences Oct. 17 with the Tap Handle Throwdown Gala, to be held at our facility on Washington Avenue. Everyone is invited to take a look at the final tap handles and support his or her favorite. Yards will be on hand to provide libations, NextFab staff will be giving tours and answering all your creative questions, and competition participants will be soaking up the glory and anticipating their potential reward. It's also quite the reward, if we say so ourselves: the winner of the competition wins an afternoon at the Yards tasting room, a $200 Yards gift card (provided the winner is over age 21), a complete Yards clothing outfit, AND a six-month NextFab membership. Finally and perhaps most importantly for civic and personal pride, the winning tap will be produced and used in bars across the city.

So come join us already! Tickets for the Oct. 17 gala are already on sale, and be sure to check out the ridiculous amount of other events taking place from Oct. 10-18 during the ninth annual DesignPhiladelphia.
