NextFab's resident companies are like our children. We love them all equally, but if you catch us fawning over our newest addition, it's just because newborns are unequivocally adorable. In this case, we're talking about Biomeme, a biotech startup poised to transform molecular diagnostics for applications ranging from food safety to STI testing. Totally cuddle-worthy.

Hack Away, My Wayward Son

For nearly three days in mid-September, a gaggle of Penn students were consuming copious amounts of take-out food and coffee. While this may be a regular occurrence on campus, these 50 students were hacking and creating as part of the second PennHacks. The event isn't your stereotypical software hackathon  that's the domain of PennHacks' big sister PennApps  but is instead a hardware-based hackathon making use of microcontrollers, Arduino, temperature sensors, gyroscopes, and components from whatever else can be effectively disassembled.

Philly Loves Manufacturing

Manufacturing is a pretty broad industry, from crayons to graphene, small-scale workshops to industrial complexes, using humans, robots or a combination of the two (the latter has a NextFab residency!). Manufacturing Day – aka MFG DAY – is going to help explain just what’s going on. NextFab already has its hands in similar pots. On one hand, it is kind of what we do. But we also sponsor robotics clubs, host workshops, and bring together people who want to make things, so we’re excited to take part in Philadelphia’s MFG DAY.

Yards Tap Handle Roundup

Back in the heat of summer, when the city breathed a collective sigh of relief if the mercury dropped down to 90, NextFab was already planning its October schedule. We were thinking beer. We’ve been happy to be a part of DesignPhiladelphia since we first opened in 2010 and we’re more thrilled than ever at our contribution this year: the Yards Tap Handle Throwdown.
